The Cleveland Arts Prize

Mission

Each year the Cleveland Arts Prize Committee, a volunteer group of arts supporters acting on behalf of the entire cultural community, publicly honors a composer, a visual artist, a writer, a choreographer, and an architect, all of them creators of original works of art that have brought distinction to themselves and the region.

The artists are presented with the Cleveland Arts Prize in their chosen field at a festive evening ceremony held annually at one of the areas’s outstanding cultural institutions. After being introduced and receiving the Arts Prize medal and certificate, the award winners share examples of their work, often to thunderous applause.

The objective of the Arts Prize ceremony is to draw attention to the presence of gifted and productive individuals in our midst, to thank them, and to encourage their continued artistic endeavor. If the arts are truly important to this community, the Arts Prize awards are one way to say so. Thus, the attendance at the ceremony of all who believe that the living creative arts are essential to the well-being of a community and to the country at large is encouraged and appreciated. Those not present are informed of the event through widespread media coverage.

The ceremony also provides a forum in which artists can be seen and heard and become more visible and audible. The Cleveland Arts Prize Committee firmly believes that when hundreds of aware and perceptive Greater Clevelanders are given the chance to see the winning artists’ works displayed, hear their music performed, listen to selections from their books, or view their dances or their buildings, it will increase the attendees’ pleasure and pride in artistic accomplishment. It is hoped that many of those present will then want to take the next step, toward consistent and enthusiastic patronage of regional artists.
