Paul
Westlake Jr., FAIA
Architect
Paul
Westlake is the kind of architect who skillfully applies his design
talents to each and every project he tackles, no matter its size.
His highly original designs range from the transformation of a humble
tool shed into a delightful coach apartment, to the giant project
that converted Cleveland's former Main Post Office into an innovative
corporate headquarters for the M-K Ferguson Company. One of the
youngest architects ever to be elected to the College of Fellows
of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Paul Westlake has
received more than 60 significant design awards for projects ranging
from major performing arts facilities to corporate headquarters.
A
principal of Westlake Reed Leskosky
(a firm founded in Cleveland in 1905 with offices in Cleveland,
Phoenix and Washington, D.C.), he has won special distinction for
his work in the area of historic restoration. Clients and projects
include the Phoenix Orpheum Theater, the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre
in the Denver Arts Complex, the fourth district Federal Reserve
Bank in Cleveland, the Potter Stewart Federal Courthouse in Cincinnati,
Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, M. K. Ferguson Plaza, Cleveland's
St. Stanislaus Church, numerous projects for Playhouse Square and
the Cleveland Clinic, and cultural arts facilities throughout the
United States.
His
work has been honored by the House of Representatives of the State
of Ohio and exhibited at Harvard University and the Akron Art Museum,
as well as written about or published in professional and popular
publications such as Inland Architect, Architecture,
Architectural Record, and Interiors.
As
a Graham Foundation and an AIA Foundation scholar at Harvard, Westlake
co-founded the Harvard Architectural Review (recognized internationally
as a leading journal of architecture theory) while earning a master
of architecture with faculty commendation. He also holds a bachelor
of arts cum laude with distinction in architecture from the University
of Pennsylvania and a bachelor of science in economics magna cum
laude, with a major in finance, from the Wharton School. He was
associated with the architectural firms of Louis Sauer in Philadelphia
and Jose Luis Sert and Cambridge Seven Associates of Cambridge,
Massachusetts, before moving to Cleveland.
While
maintaining an active professional practice, Westlake has found
time to serve on the graduate faculty and the advisory council of
the school of architecture and environmental design at Kent State
University, the alumni council of Harvard University's Graduate
School of Design (of which he is regional chair) and the council
for excellence of Arizona State University's College of Architecture
and Environmental Design. He has served as architecture commissioner
for the United States Institute for Theater Technology and as a
trustee of the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, the Committee
for Public Art, the Ohio Preservation Alliance, and the Phoenix
Orpheum Theater Foundation.
A
registered architect in 48 states, Westlake continues to work on
projects throughout the United States and Europe. His firm has been
honored with more than 100 national, state, and local AIA design
awards, an AIA Ohio Gold Medal firm award, and several honors from
the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
