“ATELIERS” ADDED SPARK TO 43rd ANNUAL CLEVELAND ARTS PRIZE AWARD CEREMONY Intimate Evening with the Winners Held Tuesday, October 21, at the Cleveland Museum of Art The Cleveland Arts Prize tried something new at its 43rd annual awards ceremony. The event, which took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at the Cleveland Museum of Art in University Circle, was reshaped as “Atelier—An Intimate Evening with the Winners of the 2003 Cleveland Arts Prize.” In place of the usual formal presentations and acceptance speeches, each of this year’s four Arts Prize winners was stationed in his own “atelier” in the museum’s lobby. Each station featured a work by the artist that exemplified his approach and characteristic themes. Attendees were invited to meet and interact with the artist and the chairperson of the peer jury that selected him. “The idea,” explained architect and arts patron Robert P. Madison, who chairs the governing board of the Cleveland Arts Prize, “was for people to get to know the artists and their work.” From 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., attendees visited with the artists in their “ateliers” (the French word for workshops or studios) and enjoyed neat nibbles and sparkling cider. The awards ceremony took place from 7:15 to 8:00 p.m. in the museum’s Gartner Auditorium, followed immediately by a champagne toast in the lobby. This year’s event was sponsored by the Cleveland Women’s City Club Foundation, Northern Ohio Live magazine and WCLV 104.9-FM. The work of the Cleveland Arts Prize is supported by generous grants from The Cleveland Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, Kulas Foundation, The avid & Lindsay Morgenthaler Foundation, John P. Murphy Foundation and The Sherwick Fund of The Cleveland Foundation.
