Dance
Great choreographers are a rare breed. But, from time to time, one arises
in our midst whose powers of expression captivate us. Busy people who
have spent the day in frenetic activity will sit quietly watching another
human being simply move, as though the world hung on the beauty
of each unfolding moment. These works, besides delighting us, teach us
things about our physical presence in the world, the marvels of the human
body and our interactions with one another. In honoring the region’s outstanding
choreographers, the Cleveland Arts Prize reminds us that every dance—whether
an introspective duet exploring human intimacy or an epic work set on
a larger company—begins with a truth learned in the body that can be shared
only through a single, perfect gesture.
