In 1999 the Cleveland Arts Prize Committee surveyed 35 awards programs to learn how other communities around the U.S. recognize the artistic excellence of creative individuals in their midst. The findings set our own tradition here in Greater Cleveland in a new light: In 75 percent of those communities, the award programs are overseen by city, state, or regional governments; 90 percent of the awards are made to regional artists whose impact has been only local; in many cases, the honorees are chosen by a very small committee or even a single person; and often a very limited range of art forms is recognized.

By contrast: The Cleveland Arts Prize is completely free of government or political agendas; the awards are given to area artists who have not only contributed to the life of this community but achieved national recognition; each award is decided by a panel of past winners and other distinguished authorities in the field; and a wide range of creative activities is honored.

The Cleveland Arts Prize is the richer and the more credible for these distinctions. Indeed, we know of no other artistic excellence award in America quite as prestigious as Greater Clevelands. The Cleveland Arts Prize is a unique tradition and institution and has drawn national and international attention to the region.
