Local composer introducing new works


Loris Chobanian, Baldwin-Wallace College composer in residence and professor of composition and guitar, has written three works for performances during the 2006-07 academic year. His Piano Trio No. 2 (“Texturas”) received its premiere last month by the Elysian Trio at B-W's Gamble Auditorium and a second performance at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Shaker Heights by Cleveland Orchestra members as part of the Cleveland Chamber Collective.

The second Chobanian premiere of the season, Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Strings, written for saxophonist Greg Banaszak, will be presented in January at B-W on a program of the composer's chamber and solo compositions. The work will be performed later in Poland . Chobanian's “Armenian Rhapsody” for Guitar and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will receive its premiere in March in St. Paul , Minn. , by the University of St. Thomas Symphonic Wind Ensemble and conductor Matthew George, with Christopher Kachian as guitar soloist. These musicians also will present the work on tour in China.
